The Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) is a policy institute that seeks sustainable solutions to the world’s escalating water crisis. SIWI manages projects, synthesises research and publishes findings and recommendations on current and future water, environment, governance and human development issues.

ISO is considering the development of a new standard to provide internationally harmonized metrics for water footprints.

About Quantis: “Quantis was founded in 2009 following a joint venture of the Swiss Ecointesys — Life Cycle Systems, a spin-off from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland, and the consulting team of the Canadian Interuniversity Research Center for the Life Cycle of Products, Processes and Services (CIRAIG), located at École Polytechnique of Montréal, Canada. Quantis was created to provide conscientious businesses and governments worldwide with tools, guidance and knowledge for achieving sustainability by mastering their life cycle and reducing their environmental impacts.”

This study is the fulfillment of the work plan set out in Stockholm. It compiles and analyzes the water-related information provided in the Corporate Responsibility (CR) reports of 110 companies representing 11 industry sectors that are either water-intensive in their operations or have significant leverage with which to influence water development, policy, or management. The analysis focuses on two aspects of corporate water reporting: 1) the approaches and methods used for determining content and 2) the depth, breadth, and usefulness of reported content related to water.
